CHICK BACKPACK TUTORIAL

I have managed to get it done in 3 nights! It was really tough to get it finished in time for my niece's b'day present (yesterday was the big day). THE CHICK BACKPACK!

This is my tutorial:

Materials:

  1. cotton fabric with any prints (in my case I used 3 different patterned of cotton and one plain yellow fabric for layering.
  2. material for collar; to layer under the cotton fabric; giving the bag a little bit more hardness and long lasting shape
  3. thick black threads
  4. needles (lots of them)
  5. time and patience (most important): I wasted 3 nights...
  6. till fabric (additional accessories)

  • STEP 1 : Map out the shape. As it is a chicken shaped; cut the collar material into shapes; the basic chick shape, the eye, the wing, the beak. (x2 of everything)

  • STEP 2 : cut out the patterned fabric following the collar material shape :the main body, and the wings (I used 2 different patterns). Cut out a whole different pattern with following the shape of the beak.

  • STEP 3 : cut out the plain fabric as it is the last layer for each shapes (the body and the wing) but for the eyes I used the plain yellow fabric as the top layer. TIPS: for the last layer, cut it slightly bigger than the collar material as it would shrink a little

  • STEP 4 : stitch them out together using the buttonhole stitches keep it tidy because it will be shown as the end product. Do it for every single shapes.

  • STEP 5 : by now we are having the body, wings, and eyes as the end results. Arrange them in place and stitch them tidily (not everything, as long as the stitch doesn't shown and the shapes are firm enough, it will do).
  • STEP 6 : find a zipper that is fitted; I make it as long as the top part of the head.

  • STEP 7 : sew the side of the zipper with the patterned fabric which layered with collar material and plain fabric which has already been buttonholed stitched together (I uses the same pattern as the main body). Do backstitch over the buttonholed to the zipper. Do it on both sides.

  • STEP 8 : stitch the main body and the zipper with the margin together. Stitch it with the buttonholed stitch on the main body shown (on both sides).

  • STEP 9 : cut another collar pattern as wide as the zipper and the marginal fabric together; cut the patterned and plain fabric as well as long as the non-covered corner of the main body (I cut longer than the estimated length but and keep the stitch open by the end when I need to make correction on the end). Backstitch the rest of the opening until the whole body of the bag is done.

  • STEP 10 : cut two pieces of collar material (3cmx50cm) to make the backpack rope. As usual, buttonhole stitch it with the patterned fabric (I uses another different fabric as the one I used for the beak).

  • STEP 11 : cut another collar material (6cmx10cm) for the handler. Do the same as the previous step.

  • STEP 12 : arrange the rope and handler as such it become a backpack. (it's halfway done; the next step is just accessories)

  • STEP 13 : cut the till fabric (8cmx14cm) x 10 pieces for ribbon. Use the collar material to tie the center of the till fabric.

  • STEP 14 : attached it to the joining point of the ropes and the handler (to cover the stitches) make sure the corner end can be seen on the front side.

  • STEP 15 : it's done, ready to wear
